Step 1 – Knowing Yourself
PREFERRED FUTURE
To start off your journey, you need to determine your dreams – your preferred future.
WORKSHEET A: WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED FUTURE?
If money, ability and time were not factors, . . .
- Where would you want to live? (city, country, small town . . .)
- What would your preferred relationships be like? (spouse? children? friends? . . .)
- What would be your preferred work environment? (indoors?, outdoors?, home? . . .)
- What would be two of your preferred occupations?
- What would be your preferred leisure activities? (sports?, travel?, hobbies? . . .)
- What would be your preferred volunteer activities?
- What would be your legacy? For what would you like to be remembered?
SELF-ASSESSMENT
Another way to learn about yourself is by using self-assessment inventories. St. Mary High School subscribes to the career development software, Career Cruising which includes self-assessment tests. (This site requires a username and password. Please contact a member of the career development staff for this information.)
There are also numerous self-assessment websites available on the internet.
APPENDIX A: SELF-ASSESSMENT
After completing self-assessments, try to find common patterns that emerge and review how the data compares to your vision of your preferred future. You may also want to summarize your results and include the summary in a career portfolio.
