Cover Letters
What is a Cover Letter?
A cover letter is a one-page letter that is placed in front of your resume within your applicant package. The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce yourself to the employer and to convince the employer to read your resume and to offer you an interview.
Types of Cover Letters
- Letter of Application or Response to an Advertisement – This format is used when applying for a job that was advertised. This type of cover letter indicates the skills and qualifications that are applicable to the job description.
- Letter of Inquiry – This format is used when contacting a business to ask about potential job openings. This type of cover letter has a broader occupational focus and indicates how your skills and abilities will benefit the company.
Guidelines for writing a Cover Letter:
- Applicant’s Address
- Employer’s Address
- Opening Salutation: address the cover letter to a specific person, if possible.
- The body of the cover letter consists of a three-paragraph format:
- First Paragraph: state the job for which you are applying; state where you heard about the position; state your belief that you are the best candidate for the job
- Second Paragraph: state three qualifications and/or skills you have that are required for the job
- Third Paragraph: provide contact information; indicate that you are anticipating an interview; indicate that your resume is attached
