The Vimy Pilgrimage Award consists of a fully funded week-long educational program in Belgium and France to study Canada’s tremendous First World War contribution. The program, scheduled for April 2–10, 2020, is offered by the Vimy Foundation and features daily visits to important First World War sites including museums, cemeteries, and historic battlefields. A total of 20 students will be selected for the 2020 program. Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay describing their volunteer work; a 500 word essay on a specific question or subject posted in the application form; a personal statement video; a resume detailing achievements, awards, and notable activities; and a reference letter from a teacher, guidance counselor or principal, service club, volunteer organization, etc. In choosing Award winners, the Award Committee will take into consideration all elements submitted for the application with special emphasis placed on the applicant’s volunteer work and service to their communities. GENERAL PROFICIENCY AWARDS: Grade 9 – Grade 11

The General Proficiency Award for students in Grade 9 – Grade 11 is to be given to the student who makes the most complete contribution to the whole life of St. Mary High School and is based on the following criteria: academic achievement 50%, athletic contributions 20%, school life contributions 20%, and religious life contributions 10%. Application forms are available at the library, or online at http://bit.ly/AwardsGrade9-11 and must be returned to the LIBRARY by Thursday, May 23^rd at 3:30 p.m. These awards will be presented at the school celebration/awards assembly on Wednesday, June 5th.

Grade 11 students are encouraged to apply for the Rotary Citizenship Award to be presented at the awards presentation in June. This $300 award is presented to a Grade 11 student who is involved in the school, community, and parish. The application forms are available at http://bit.ly/AwardsGrade9-11 on the school’s career website and must be submitted to the LIBRARY by Thursday, May 23rd at 3:30 p.m. The student’s academic transcript and attendance will also be given to the awards selection committee. This award will be presented at the school celebration/awards assembly on Wednesday, June 5th.

Students in Grade 12 may be eligible for a Major/Minor Sports Award that will be presented at the school celebration/awards assembly on Wednesday, June 5th.  The application forms are available at the LIBRARY or at http://bit.ly/AwardGrade12 on the school’s career website. Completed forms must be returned to the LIBRARY by Thursday, May 23^rd. The Beaverbrook Vimy Prize, is a prestigious two-week-long learning experience during which exceptional youth, 15-17 years of age, study the interwoven First and Second World War history of Canada, Great Britain, and France. Scheduled for August 2019 in Belgium and France, students will attend lectures, visit former battlefields, trenches and underground tunnels, as well as visit museums and cemeteries, and explore monuments such as the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.  Canadian, British, and French prize recipients will also participate in commemorative ceremonies and meet a few of the remaining veterans and members of the French Resistance. Applicants are required to submit the following: 1) an essay in response to a specific question, 2) a reflection piece based on artwork in the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, 3) a personal statement video, 4) a resume and 5) a reference letter. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s (NCTR) Imagine a Canada team is calling all K – Gr 12 students from across the country to lead our nation through reconciliation and make the future of Canada a more respectful place. Understanding residential school history can be a challenging and difficult topic; learning through art can heal, transform and empower youth to make a difference in Canadian society. Students can share their vision of what reconciliation can be in a poem, a song, a painting, a sculpture, a rap, a drawing, an essay, anything! The STEAM Horizon Awards invite Canada’s youth to promote positive changes throughout their community using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Five Canadian students will be awarded $25,000 each, to attend a Canadian university or college to study in a STEAM field. Two of these awards will be given to Indigenous students. The winners will also be invited to Ottawa and recognized at an award ceremony in April 2019. To be eligible, students must be 16-18 years old, recognized for STEAM-related accomplishments, have a minimum academic average of 85%, and be preparing to enroll in Fall 2019 in their first year of post-secondary education in a STEAM field in Canada. More information about the prize program and how to apply can be found at steamhorizonawards.ca.
