Students in Grade 12 may be eligible for a Major/Minor Fine Arts Award that will be presented at the school celebration/awards assembly on Wednesday, June 5th.  The application forms are available at the LIBRARY or at http://bit.ly/AwardGrade12 on the school’s career website. Completed forms must be returned to the LIBRARY by Thursday, May 23^rd. The Beaverbrook Vimy Prize, is a prestigious two-week-long learning experience during which exceptional youth, 15-17 years of age, study the interwoven First and Second World War history of Canada, Great Britain, and France. Scheduled for August 2019 in Belgium and France, students will attend lectures, visit former battlefields, trenches and underground tunnels, as well as visit museums and cemeteries, and explore monuments such as the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.  Canadian, British, and French prize recipients will also participate in commemorative ceremonies and meet a few of the remaining veterans and members of the French Resistance. Applicants are required to submit the following: 1) an essay in response to a specific question, 2) a reflection piece based on artwork in the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, 3) a personal statement video, 4) a resume and 5) a reference letter. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s (NCTR) Imagine a Canada team is calling all K – Gr 12 students from across the country to lead our nation through reconciliation and make the future of Canada a more respectful place. Understanding residential school history can be a challenging and difficult topic; learning through art can heal, transform and empower youth to make a difference in Canadian society. Students can share their vision of what reconciliation can be in a poem, a song, a painting, a sculpture, a rap, a drawing, an essay, anything! The STEAM Horizon Awards invite Canada’s youth to promote positive changes throughout their community using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Five Canadian students will be awarded $25,000 each, to attend a Canadian university or college to study in a STEAM field. Two of these awards will be given to Indigenous students. The winners will also be invited to Ottawa and recognized at an award ceremony in April 2019. To be eligible, students must be 16-18 years old, recognized for STEAM-related accomplishments, have a minimum academic average of 85%, and be preparing to enroll in Fall 2019 in their first year of post-secondary education in a STEAM field in Canada. More information about the prize program and how to apply can be found at steamhorizonawards.ca. Students in Grade 5- Grade 12 may enter the contest by writing an essay (300 words or less) based on someone they think made the biggest impact (positive or negative) on Canadian society in 2018. Prizes are awarded in two grade levels: Grade 5-8 and Grade 9-12. Two winners will be selected in each level: Grand Prize is $3,000 for the student and $1000 for the Department/Classroom of the teacher. First Prize is $2,000 for the student and $1000 for the Department/Classroom of the teacher. The deadline to enter is December 31^st, 2018. The Loran Award seeks to recognize well-rounded students who demonstrate character, promise of leadership, and strong commitment and service in the community. Up to 32 Loran Awards are available, valued at $100,000 over four years. The application deadline is October 17^th, 2018 for sponsored applications and October 24th, 2018 for direct-pool applications. École St. Mary High School can sponsor up to three candidates and sponsorship is competitive. Students who are interested in being considered for sponsorship must submit a list of school/community involvement and leadership activities to Mrs.Rapin in Student Services by Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Students who are not selected for school sponsorship may still apply through the direct-pool. Grade 12 students are encouraged to apply for the Tillie and Joe Kawula Scholarship and Hershel Davidner Memorial Scholarships. The two $1000.00 scholarships will be awarded to students who value academics, community involvement, and volunteerism and are entering a recognized university or technical institute. One application will apply to both awards. These scholarships are open to Grade 12 graduates from Saskatchewan Rivers School Division, Prince Albert Catholic School Division and the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Prince Albert campus Academic Grade 12 program.  An application form and additional information is available at http://bit.ly/AwardGrade12 on the school career website. The General Proficiency Award for students in Grade 9 – Grade 11 is to be given to the student who makes the most complete contribution to the whole life of St. Mary High School and is based on the following criteria: academic achievement 50%, athletic contributions 20%, school life contributions 20%, and religious life contributions 10%.
