Grad 2019 Awards

Students who are interested in applying for awards that will be presented at Grad 2019 must submit a Grad 2019 Awards Application Checklist Cover Page and a Grad 2019 Awards Application. These forms, as well as application forms for the General ProficiencyRoyal Canadian Legion Award, and The Sisters of Our Ladies of the Cross Scholarship are available at http://bit.ly/SMHSGradAwards An awards package containing the description of the awards is available at the library. The checklist cover page, awards application, and other required documents, such as reference letters (not a relative, contact information etc.) must be submitted to the library no later than Tuesday, May 14th at 3:30 p.m.

Global Youth Institute (Gr 8 – 11)

Two students, currently in Grade 8 to 11, and their teachers or mentors have the opportunity to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Des Moines, Iowa to represent Saskatchewan at the Global Youth Institute from October 17th – 19th , 2019. Students will explore pressing food security and agricultural issues with international experts, tour innovative industrial and research facilities, and explore exciting ways to make a difference in their community and around the world. Selected students will be required to research a global challenge and write a five-page essay under the supervision of their teacher or mentor. The application deadline is Monday, April 15th. Rotary Adventure in Citizenship

This annual event provides a unique opportunity for a select group of young Canadians to come together in Ottawa and gain a better understanding of our country. Through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and others, students learn about the workings of our democratic institutions. Through meeting one another and having discussions among themselves, students learn to appreciate the diversity of Canada and the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.  Students who are interested in this opportunity are encouraged to contact a guidance councillor or any of the following teachers: Ms. Khan, Mrs. Lohneis, Mrs. Trumier or Mr. Joncas. JUNO 75 Pilgrimage For Students

On the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy, the Juno Beach Centre is sponsoring a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for high school students from across the country. Students will travel on a tour of Canadian battlefields of the First and Second World Wars, following in the footsteps of thousands of men and women who came before them. The Juno 75 Pilgrimage is a heavily subsidized trip. Successful applicants are asked to contribute $1000 towards the cost of the trip, with the Juno Beach Centre covering the remainder. This includes airfare to Europe from the selected participants nearest commercial airport, as well as ground transportation, accommodation, entry fees and most meals in Europe. Some meals, as well as any personal spending, are the responsibility of individual participants. Fundraising tools and support will be provided to successful applicants. Each participant of the pilgrimage is expected to complete a research project on a member of their community who was in involved in the Canadian war effort during the Second World War. This project will be presented to the group at the Juno Beach Centre during the trip. To apply, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Canadian high school student at the time of application
  • Between the age of 15 and 18 years old in July 2019
  • Will have completed at least one Canadian history class prior to the summer of 2019
  • Must be in possession of a valid Canadian passport by the spring of 2019

An application must include the following:

  • A letter of motivation (no more than 500 words) explaining why you feel you deserve to be included in this pilgrimage, and what you hope to take away from the experience
  • One (1) of: an essay (no more than 1000 words) or a video statement or a digital project or a piece of art which answers the question: “How do you personally feel connected to the experiences of Canadians during the Second World War?”
  • A resume detailing academic, volunteer, community, and/or professional accomplishments.
  • Two (2) letters of reference. One from a school official: teacher, counsellor or principal, and one from a member of the community not related to the applicant.

Complete applications, including letters of reference, must be submitted to the Google form linked on this page no later than midnight (PST) on Friday, January 25th. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. SHAD 2019 Enrichment Program

SHAD is a 27-day STEAM and entrepreneurship based enrichment program for students in grade 10, 11 and 12. Participants live at a host university campus outside their hometown while engaging in experiential learning, sociocultural activities and community building. The SHAD 2019 program will take place from Sunday, June 30 to Friday July 26, 2019. Students can apply by visiting www.shad.ca/apply Applications must be submitted by Monday, November 19, 2018 and applicants will be notified of their application status in February 2019. U of S Open House

Monday, September 10th, 2018

The University of Saskatchewan Open House will be on Friday, September 28th. Throughout the day, students will explore the campus and faculties, take part in hands on activities, meet University Staff and faculty, and speak with current students about their U of S Experience. Grade 12 students who are interested in attending must pre-register online at explore.usask.ca. After registering, please see Mrs. Rapin or Mrs. Dauk in Student Services if you need to book a spot on the bus.

Wednesday, June 27th – Grad Mass & Commencement at the Art Hauser Centre

                                     – 8:00 a.m. Graduands arrive dressed in Cap & Gown

                                     – 8:15 a.m. Graduands line up in north hallway 

                                      – 9:00 a.m. Ceremony begins with entrance of Graduands

                                      – Graduates return gown before leaving the ceremony

Wednesday, June 27th – Grad Parent Committee Evening Program

                                       – 6:30 p.m. Graduates and escorts arrive for Grand March

                                       – pick up quotations along the north corridor and sit in designated area

                                        – 7:00 p.m. Graduates and escorts are seated

                                         – 7:30 p.m. Grand March begins

Future U of S Students: Math Placement Test

The University of Saskatchewan is pleased to offer Prince Albert and area students the opportunity to write the Math Placement Test (MPT) in Prince Albert. Future U of S students who register in Math 110, 121, 123, and 125 are required to write the MPT. Traditionally, U of S students had to travel to Saskatoon to write this test. The Prince Albert date and time are yet to be confirmed (possibly second week of June at U of S Prince Albert Campus). Any students who think they want to write the Math Placement Test in Prince Albert are asked to reply by email to pbibby@srsd119.ca with the following information by Friday, May 18, 2018:

  • First Name (as it appears on your PAWS account)
  • Middle Initial (as  it appears on your PAWS account)
  • Last Name (as  it appears on your PAWS account)
